In September and October 2022, I led a project with d/Deaf young people, building homemade radios. We were supported by the Sensory Support Service and commissioned by Voices in the Gallery, as part of 'A Language of Holes' access project with Wysing Arts Centre.
During each session, young people built a different kind of radio receiver or transmitter, learning about the physics of radio - which many of the participants use daily in their hearing aids. Brigitte Hart, fellow member of Shortwave Collective, joined us for the second session - where we constructed Open Wave-Receivers. The project was designed with maximum access in mind, and leaves behind a new 'how-to' guide for constructing basic VLF radios.
