‘Doremifasolasido’ is an annual group residency that invites emerging artists from around the country to Cumbria to forge links between artists and arts organisations working in urban and rural settings. I was nominated by October Gallery to participate in this residency in November 2018.
Over 7 days I lived and worked with 12 artists, responding to the unique site of Art Gene, in the enigmatic area of Barrow-in-Furness. The town and borough has a rich industrial and maritime past, as well as being an area of natural and historical importance, such as South Walney Nature Reserve and Piel Island. During the week we were given local tours and access to facilities at both Art Gene’s headquarters and their ongoing projects in the South Walney Nature Reserve; as well as new media equipment and facilities courtesy of Full of Noises (formerly Octopus Collective).
The week culminated in a public open day, including an exhibition of artwork created over the residency, to which I contributed Vanguard, a sound work with accompanying research zine.
